Selection Principle Of Pepper Spray
Oct 28, 2022
Choosing anti wolf pepper spray is the same as buying other things. When you walk into a wolf proof pepper spray store, you will often find that there are at least 30 different brands with different specifications and names. Women usually buy the best canned one or pick their favorite name. In fact, you should pay attention to its practicability when you buy the anti wolf spray. The anti wolf spray purchased should contain at least 15% of the "active ingredients" and its Scovillesin index should reach at least 2000000. "Scoville capsaicin" can make eyes swollen and make people feel burning on the face. When you use the anti wolf spray, you actually want to ensure that it sends the message of "Don't disturb me!" and give you enough time to leave the scene. There are many kinds of anti wolf sprays. Some sprays can spray a thin and long column of water like a water gun, some can spray a layer of fog at a close distance, and even produce foam like toothpaste at a very close distance. For ordinary people, the best choice is probably the fog type, because it does not require you to ensure a hit in an emergency.
1. OC, commonly known as capsaicin and pepper. It is an anti riot agent ingredient mainly used for civil use, and it is oily.
As its name implies, OC is closely related to pepper. OC was first separated from pepper in 1876. It is a highly effective, colorless amino crystalline substance with strong stimulation. Even if only 1g OC is added to 100000 drops of water, it can still be felt. During World War I, OC was suggested to be used as a military irritant and a lot of research was carried out. Its molecular structure was determined shortly after the war, and artificial synthesis was achieved in 1930. However, due to the extensive application of CN and CS, OC did not get real development. This situation did not change until the 1980s. It is found that although the comprehensive performance of CN and CS is relatively good, it is difficult to be effective in the face of opponents who are painless or have strong ability to endure pain, such as highly hyperactive people, mental patients, drug addicts and alcoholics. Spray CN or CS into their eyes, and they can still fight with their eyes open. When using OC spray, no matter whether they feel pain or not, they will automatically close their eyes, which is determined by the biological reflex function of the human body.
The spiciness of OC spray is measured by Scofield thermal unit - SHU value. The higher the SHU value, the stronger the spiciness of the spray. The OC spray used by most capsaicin ejectors has a pungency of 500~2 million Scofield thermal units. In general, the higher the concentration of OC spray, the longer it takes for the infected person to recover, and the more difficult it is to remove the pollution to the environment (the higher the concentration of OC spray, the more greasy the spray), which also brings problems to the spraying of the injector (the high content of oily resin makes spraying extremely difficult). In addition, OC spray with high concentration of oil sprayed by high pressure can penetrate into the exposed skin of human body and produce acupuncture like pain effect, which is very dangerous to human body.
SHU (Su) - Scoville index (or Scoville heat unit), which was designated by American chemist Scoville in 1912. He named it after his family name. One gram of pure OC crystal needs to be diluted with 1 million drops of water to reach a tasteless spiciness. The hot pepper we eat everyday has a calorific value of only 20000 SHU, while the pure capsaicin crystal has a calorific value of 20 million SHU. A qualified defense spray product should have a calorific value index of at least 1 million SHU, and the common one is 2 million SHU. This standard is obtained by diluting the pure capsaicin crystal into a formula with a concentration of 10%. There are many concentrations of OC sprays. Usually, the concentration of OC sprays used by law enforcement agencies is 5%~10%.
OC spray is mainly composed of highly effective, colorless crystalline phenolic compound capsaicin. Capsaicin is produced by glands on the placenta of pepper. The placenta of pepper is located at the top of the pepper stem. It is precisely because of capsaicin that we feel hot when we eat hot peppers. Capsaicin is the real reason why hot peppers are hot.
Capsaicin contained in OC spray includes the following (all are abbreviations): capsaicin (CAP), nordihydrocapsaicin (NORDIH), homocapsaicin (HOMO), and dihydrohomocapsaicin (DIHHOMO). In addition, it also contains a compound vanilla nonanoic acid, abbreviated as NONIV, which is a synthetic compound with basically the same characteristics as natural compounds. It can be mixed with natural compounds or used alone.
In the past, the concentration of pure capsaicin was determined by chemists as 15 million Scofield thermal units, and the value was set as 25 million, which is the most "hot" level of capsaicin under ideal conditions.
In addition, since various carriers and suspensions will weaken the effectiveness of the sprayer, the SHU value marked on the ejector shell does not necessarily represent the effective value that can be reached after the lacrimator is sprayed, so there is not much relationship between the marked high concentration and high efficiency.
The solvent or carrier of OC spray agent should also be noted when selecting OC spray agent. The carrier occupies most of the volume of OC container, and it brings OC from the spray tank nozzle to the target. In the air, the carrier begins to volatilize. As OC is an activator, it can be evenly dissolved in the carrier. After the carrier volatilizes, most of the activator will fall on the target.
Generally, isopropyl alcohol carrier or nonalcoholic carrier is used, so pay special attention to the flammability of OC products when using isopropyl alcohol. Some manufacturers claim that the alcohol carrier products can work normally at any temperature, especially when the active ingredient (resin oil capsaicin) is sprayed, because this ingredient can dissolve the oily substances on the skin surface, expand the skin pores, and speed up the effectiveness of OC spray. Non combustible carriers mainly use water, mineral oil, Freon, Dymel, methylene chloride and other industrial compounds. However, the use of these chemicals in large quantities will cause poisoning and even cancer, and will also destroy ozone, so it is best to avoid using them.
